A
nosegay, Tussie-Mussie, or posy is a small flower bouquet, typically
given as a gift. They have existed in some form since at least medieval times,
when they were carried or worn around the head or bodice.
So a
nosegay was an ornament that appeals to the nose or
nostril.
The
posy holder is a lady's accessory in silver or other metal, resembling a
small vase.
In
earlier times before sanitation and concerns with personal hygiene, the nosegays
were carried to superstitiously ward off disease or to camouflage the unpleasant
smells of the street.
